CPE with no power (Dying Gasp)
Symptom: the CPE shows up as No power.
What it means
When the ONU loses power, it sends the OLT one last alert called Dying Gasp. Cpehub interprets this alert and marks the device as No power — distinguishing it from a fiber drop (LOS) or a freeze (Offline).
In other words: No power = likely power outage at the customer's home. This is the easiest scenario, since it tends to resolve itself once power comes back.
Step by step
-
Confirm the No power status on the CPE and the Dying Gasp event on the Events tab.
-
Check whether it's isolated or collective:
- Several CPEs without power in the same region/OLT at the same time → power outage in the area (utility company) or at the provider's own POP.
- Just one customer → power outage at their home, faulty outlet/power adapter.
-
Guide the customer to check the power, adapter, and cable of the device.
Most common causes
| Cause | Indication | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Power outage at home | One customer, Dying Gasp | Wait for power to come back / check outlet and adapter |
| Faulty power adapter | Customer recurrently without power | Replace the adapter |
| Power outage in the area | Several customers at once | Wait for the utility company |
| Power outage at the POP | Many CPEs from several OLTs | Escalate urgently (NOC) |
When to escalate
- Many CPEs without power at the same time (POP/backbone) → NOC, urgent.
- Customer's power is OK but the device won't turn on → equipment/adapter replacement.
